Description
Capanea is a genus of two species in the flowering plant family Gesneriaceae. The species are epiphytic and occur in Central America and the Andean regions of South America. Capanea grandiflora is thought to be bat pollinated. In older literature the name is often misspelled "Campanea".
Recent phylogenetic studies suggest that the two species of Capanea are nested within the genus Kohleria Roalson et al., 2005a) and both species of Capanea have recently been transferred to Kohleria (Roalson et al., 2005b). However, Capanea species are morphologically very distinct from Kohleria species in their epiphytic habit, absence of scaly rhizomes, capitate stigmas, and 4-valved capsules and this genus is likely to be found in the botanical literature for years to come, despite clear molecular evidence that Kohleria is paraphyletic if Capanea is excluded.

Beautiful, it must be so camouflaged in the wild
Blair Wainman replied:
Thanks Vickie!! You know, I've gone back to that spot several times and I can't find them so don't know what has happened to them but it's quite a unique flower for sure!!

Of all your great flowers, I like this one best of all. Very simple treatment of a very elegant flower.
Blair Wainman replied:
Wow! Thanks...it's a very unusual flower...and there are so many unusual flowers here in this country! Glad you liked it!!

Blair, that really is a shame about the newer camera. I've talked to several people who have had something like this happen to them ... very distressing. Can you not at least call or write the manufacturer and fuss a bit??? Sometimes all these things need is a professional tweak or two ... ???
Blair Wainman replied:
Unfortunately it's the lens quality and the sensor! Both are inferior as I have discovered upon reading after purchasing it is to my own chagrin!

Fascinating image, so detailed! Dee
Blair Wainman replied:
It really is fascinating!! It took me months to find out what it was! There is so little written on the flora of Colombia! I actually found a website showing a video of the bats pollinating these flowers, at night! Amazing indeed!! Thanks Dee!!

I agree with Lois, awesome clarity Blair!
Blair Wainman replied:
Thanks Al!! You know, I don't know about you but I am sorry I parted with my DSC-H5. The one I have now DSC-HX1 doesn't have the clarity of the other one! The flora is amazing out in the boonies around in Colombia!

Blair ... just left you a looooong note, but it must have stopped off for coffee somewhere, 'cause I don't see it!!! ANYway ... what a COOOL and unusual flower this is ... awesome shape and it almost looks like it's wearing a necklace ... flower within a flower kind of thing!!!!! But the best part is your amazing photography ... incredible detail and focus, Blair ... just awesome!!!! if I had to, I could easily count all the little hairy bits!!!! Now i have to ask ... did we get a new macro lens???????? Come on, spill the beans!!!!!! Faved of course!!!!!
Blair Wainman replied:
Awww, thank you so much my friend!! But you know, this one is just from a simple point 'n shoot! Actually it's from my old Sony DSC-H5 and I'm almost sorry that I bought the one i have now. The clarity is not as good as the DSC-HX1. As far as finding this beauty, I really lucked out! I was wandering on the undeveloped property of some friends who are so fortunate to live on the edge of a cloud forest and it is a treasure trove of fauna and flora! I would like to go back there but will have to wait for a ride to get there as it's too far to walk. Lol!! Thanks for the fave and for such an inspirational word!! Much appreciated!!
