Description
One-room schoolhouses once dotted the entire province and were both the community and educational hub of the province. Parallel to the government allotment of land for the railways was an equally valued allotment of land for schoolhouses. Mass urbanization and institutionalization of the educational system has since all but desimated these landmarks. Recently efforts have been made to at least preserve the land on which these pillars of the community was once built. This is one of but many fading icons of Canadian Prairie Heritage. This site is the Burton School District 2744, east of Vanguard, Saskatchewan, Canada. The School opened in 1916 and then closed in 1947 but during its brief history was education host to many senior residents of the Vanguard district, having received their primary and secondary education in this building! A few even went on to get their teaching credentials and return to teach in the very school they themselves received their school education.

Congratulations Blair. What a wonderful image my friend and such interesting read too. Love sharpness of the bulding and softness of the grass in the foreground. They balance each other very well. f/v

These old, derelict buildings are a favorite of mine. There is so much history (either personal or general) hidden in the crumbling walls and falling roofs. This is a wonderful image, Blair! V/F

I wish I could favor this one 100 times. It brings tears to my eyes as we had almost an identical building on our old farm.
